With my horrible sense of direction, I am an avid user of Google Maps. Specifically, their directions, traffic estimates and sometimes their live cameras.
With all of the amazing features that Google Maps has to offer, MapQuest almost seems like a relic from the past.
When you used it last, did you notice the link “Get Maps on your phone?”
What exactly is it?
Well it’s an ingenious idea to help you go green and never have to print out another direction list or carry around pen and paper again…
Here are some of the features it offers:
My Location: See your current location on a map, even if you don’t have GPS. It uses cell phone towers around you to bounce the signal off of and figure out where you are.
Business Listings: Search for any business or category of interest get local business addresses and driving or walking directions.
Driving Directions: Now get driving directions to anywhere you want. Instead of having to remember to print out the paper or carry it around, you are safe knowing the directions will always be with you as long as you have your phone.
Another bonus: You don’t even have to enter your starting point since the phone already knows where you are!
Transit Directions: Need to take public transportation? But aren’t sure when or where to go? Get bus and subway routes and schedules.

Walking Directions: Want to track a walk, jog or run and see not only the distance, but estimate how long it will take you to get there?
No problem, this feature can do that! I have also found it helpful to find my way back to my starting my point when I have gone meandering off while I am travelling in new cities. It helps especially since I am not a fan of asking directions!
Street View: If you are more of a visual person, this helps out a lot.
It gives you the ability to view an image of the street that the house or business is on before you get there. It can also be useful in visualizing turns and sides of the street that things are located on or around.

Traffic: This is by far my favorite feature.
It not only gives you real-time traffic, but it also allows you to switch to a different day of the week and time to guestimate how much traffic flow is usually at that time.
Based upon this information it then helps you to decide the quickest way, which is something that most people’s regular navigation systems don’t help you with.

After reading all of that, I am sure you are left wondering:
“Is my phone compatible?“
It’s actually pretty simple to find out if your phone will work with Google Maps Mobile…
…just try sending yourself a text message by entering in your cell phone number on the top of the Google Maps for Mobile page. Then click “send link to my phone.” You’ll know shortly after it works with your phone.
So what are you waiting for?
Start using Google Maps on your mobile phone. And it’s completely free!
