Educational Discounts: Take Advantage Of Students- and Staff-Only Discounts…

by Tim Goggin on July 3, 2009

I know I have written about buying refurbished and used Macs before- but now I want to talk specifically to students, faculty and staff.

Teachers are having a tough time right now either keeping their jobs or finding one. Students are also struggling to pay their loans and afford the ever increasing cost of books.

Consequently everyone is trying to be frugal and make as many cutbacks as possible. But sometimes a good deal is just too good to pass up…

There are some great discounts and deals out there right now and you should take advantage of them when buying a computer and/or accessories for it.

For starters the Apple store has a separate section on their website for education that offers discounted pricing for your school.

You are eligible to receive these prices if you are a college student, teacher, administrator, staff or a board member of any grade level (K-12 or Higher Education). Also parents of students who are attending or accepted into a higher education institution can use these prices as well if they are purchasing on behalf of their child.

In addition to those restrictions, there is also a limit to the amount of Apple products that you can buy:

  • One Desktop
  • One Mac Mini
  • One Notebook
  • Two Displays
  • Two Software Titles
  • No Limit on the Apple TV’s
  • No Limit on the iPod

Luckily each of those restrictions is only per academic school year.

In addition to the discounted prices, Apple also sometimes runs promotions for students and faculty as well. Here are two of the current promotions:

  1. Free iPod Touch: When you buy a new Mac through September 8, you can get a free iPod touch.
  2. Free Printer: When you buy a new Mac and qualifying printer from the Apple online store, get a mail-in rebate for up to $100.

To take advantage of these discounts, start off by finding your school on their education website:

Link to K-12 school finder

Now that you have that new Apple computer, you need some software to sync all your information up to your cell phone. Or how about some new ringtones for your iPhone?

We also offer student and faculty discounts for our products.

Just fill out the educational discount form and a link to your discounted pricing will be sent to you. In addition to our student and faculty discounts, we also offer quantity discounts and pricing for individual licenses.

Still not find what you are looking for? Well when it comes to other technology, you should check out Campus Tech, or “JourneyEd” for other great deals for students and faculty.

They also offer discounts for large quantity purchases as well as for non-profit organizations. Their savings are up to 85% off regular retail prices of software and technology products.

Have you found any great student/faculty discounts? Let us know so we can spread the word!

My experience has been that I can mail order retail priced Mac products off the internet for the same price as the student discount when factoring in the free shipping and no sales tax. It would be great if Apple offered a decent student discount or maybe things have changed.
